Best SME

This Award is for the best all round performance for a small or medium size independent enterprise. Contenders are those companies who have scored well in a number of categories. Past performance and plans for the future are also taken into account.

Congratulations to the 2011 winner Loadhog

Loadhog is pushing the boundaries of traditional manufacturing. With their commitment to sustainability, focus on continuous improvement and review, abolition of job descriptions and its dedicated ideas and innovation centre, Loadhog is paving the way for a new era of manufacturing plants.

The Sheffield-based transit packaging manufacturer formed in 2004 as a small start-up company is now an innovative, fast growing international business with 50% of its sales outside the UK. Each employee owns shares in the company and all financial information is shared with all members of staff.

The company is competing in an arena which has historically been served by either heavyweight generic steel products, or environmentally unfriendly one-trip packaging. Loadhog, however produces neither of these product types and places a strong emphasis on sustainability.

All its products deliver three sustainable benefits: they eliminate the need for one-trip packaging such as shrink wrap and banding; they increase vehicle-fill, reducing the number of journeys thanks to intelligent design; and they deliver energy savings via operational efficiency savings and eliminate breakages.

Every Loadhog product has a sticker which says who made it and who checked it – Loadhog is a company which is proud of its work and proud of its staff.

Based at The Hog Works - a renovated gun factory near the River Don – the company also invests 5% of its annual turnover in new product development, while 1% of all company profit is donated to charity.

Ed Stubbs, Loadhog’s Managing Director, said

“Having only relocated our entire operation into far larger premises late last year, it is particularly pleasing to have gained such wide ranging recognition from the Institution now. Winning this award is the result of huge efforts from an incredibly dedicated team of people over the last few years and very well deserved - my congratulations go to all of them.”
