People Effectiveness

Sponsored by Power Panels

People are the foundations of success. How do you make the most of your workforce?

The selection and development of your employees can make or break your business. Assessing how you utilise your most important assets can foster happier, more productive employees and a more profitable business outlook. The People Effectiveness audit module can help you benchmark your people policies in areas such as training, development, and decision-making to make sure you’re achieving your company’s full people potential.

This section determines the progress made towards creating a skilled workforce and enabling individuals to attain their full capability.  People are a company’s greatest asset and should be selected both for employment and for promotion based upon their level of competence and experience. There should also be clear training and development opportunities for staff to maximise their potential.

Congratulations to the 2011 winner Bombardier Transportation

Bombardier Transportation deserves full credit for maintaining their policy of open communication with employees during 2011. This meant that staff remained highly motivated and committed to ensuring projects were delivered on time and that quality was maintained despite the challenges they have been through.
In July 2011 the company announced 1,400 redundancies due to it missing out on the Government’s Thameslink contract. Earlier in the year, in order to fulfil an existing contract, the company had to increase production from 6 cars a week to 25 cars a week, the highest ever level of production in the Derby site’s 150 year history. Although the company increased the workforce by 30% to deal with the higher levels of production required much of the success of the project was due to the commitment of staff. Given that many knew they would not have a job later in the year, it is to Bombardier’s credit that commitment remains so high.

The train manufacturer is passionate about its people and provides training and development for all staff, including contract workers. To date the plant has had a total of 201 days without record of any lost time accidents, which is particularly impressive given that it’s a heavy machinery site.

In addition the plant’s excellent apprenticeship scheme has proved hugely successful with many local engineers using it as a route to a career in the company.

Andy Derbyshire, Site Operations Director for Bombardier Transportation, said: “I am delighted that we were successful in winning the People Effectiveness Manufacturing Excellence Award. It is a tribute to our people rising to the challenge of continuing to produce high quality, on-time products during what has been a difficult period in the UK. My thanks go to all of our people at our Derby site, without their continued dedication and hard work, this would not have been possible!”
